How Far Do River Road's New Lanes Actually Take You From Wellen Park?

On Friday, October 2, Gov. Ron DeSantis cut the ribbon on the widening of River Road, State Road 777. Five miles between I-75 and US 41 went from two lanes to six. A month later, the new pavement has changed the drive out of Wellen Park toward the interstate. It has not touched the drive toward Englewood and Manasota Key. Once you cross US 41, River Road turns back into the two-lane road the county has been planning to replace for years. Sarasota County's latest schedule gives the earliest possible start of construction there as late 2027, and the money still isn't fully in place.

So the stoplight at US 41 now marks where the new road ends. Here is what each side looks like for a Wellen Park household planning its week.

What the Northern Five Miles Now Carry

In its October 2 announcement, the Florida Department of Transportation said the six lanes triple the road's capacity. FDOT listed these additions along the corridor:

  • Shared-use paths: two 10-foot paths, one on each side of River Road
  • Safety upgrades: new lighting and signals, pedestrian islands, and ADA-accessible ramps
  • Wildlife crossings: two underpasses that let animals cross beneath the roadway

According to YourSun, the widened stretch includes traffic signals at West Villages Parkway, Center Road and East Venice Avenue. FOX 13 also reported new crosswalk technology and speed monitoring systems.

The road came out bigger than first planned. When FDOT presented the design in January 2022, it called for four lanes from I-75 to Center Road and six from Center Road to US 41. After a public hearing on November 21, 2024, FDOT added one more lane in each direction between Center Road and I-75. That made the full corridor six lanes. If you drove the stretch near the interstate during construction expecting it to stay narrower, this is why it didn't.

You'll see two cost figures for the project, and they measure different things. The governor's announcement and WWSB describe $61 million as a joint state and county investment. FDOT's own project page lists a $47.5 million construction cost.

Open, With the Punch List Still Running

At the ribbon-cutting, the governor said the project was finished "ahead of schedule." FDOT's project page still shows the job in the construction phase, with "Early 2027" as the estimated completion. The two statements fit together. All six lanes are open, and the crews are finishing what's left around them. The Sarasota/Manatee MPO's traffic report for the week of October 25 says maintenance and erosion-control work is ongoing, potholes will be patched as needed on all travel lanes, and closeout work continues. YourSun added that thermoplastic striping, drainage repairs and other punch-list items are still to come, and that cabbage palms have been delivered for planting.

That means short lane closures and new landscaping along the road through the winter. Speed enforcement has already started. At the ceremony, Sarasota County Sheriff Kurt Hoffman told FOX 13 that deputies are watching the new pavement closely:

"This is fresh blacktop. It's about 7 miles straight away... I see that we are already having trouble with people who are speeding. Today we had some of our motor officers out here. We will have traffic officers out here who will be regularly monitoring this."

The new lanes are faster for drivers who keep to the speed limit. On a straight, wide road with no traffic ahead, the limit is easy to drift past, and the sheriff has said his officers will be there.

South of US 41, the Old Road Picks Back Up

Head south across US 41 toward Englewood and you are on the county's part of the corridor, which is on a much slower timeline. Sarasota County calls it the River Road Regional Interstate Connector. The plan is a 7.2-mile, four-lane widening of South River Road and Winchester Boulevard from US 41 to the county line.

In an August 17 memo reported by The Sarasota News Leader, county Transportation Director Spencer Anderson wrote that design and permitting should be complete in fall 2027, "with a possible construction start in late 2027." He put construction at an estimated $88 million, and said staff is still working with landowners along South River Road to finish acquiring right of way.

Money is the bigger obstacle. The same memo listed the county's seven priority road projects at an estimated $329 million, with $302.5 million available. The connector was the only one of the seven still short of funding, by $26.5 million. The Herald-Tribune reported the same $26.5 million gap in May 2026. The largest funding source is $70,325,616 from the county's Resilient SRQ program, applied mainly to the South River Road phase. County staff also told the News Leader that $1.5 million in federal money once counted toward the project was eliminated and is being dropped from the funding plan.

YourSun also reported that a separate, busy two-mile stretch of two-lane River Road isn't part of the connector design at all. Officials say it will be widened eventually but that there's no money for it for at least the next five years.

What Arrives First Is Groundwork for the Widening

The first work south of US 41 is mostly preparation, though you may see crews soon. County staff told the News Leader that $2 million in Federal Highway Administration funds will pay for two smaller projects. One is a signal-communication fiber network along South River Road. The other is an intersection and widening job on a short piece of Winchester Boulevard, about 1,000 feet long. Federal funding rules require both to be done before the main widening can begin, and staff said they "will begin later this calendar year."

Project What it covers Where it stands
ITS signal fiber Traffic-signal communication network along South River Road, US 41 to Winchester Boulevard County staff said "later this calendar year"
Winchester intersection Intersection work and widening of Winchester Boulevard, from South River Road to 1,000 feet south County staff said "later this calendar year"
Connector Phase 4 Four-lane widening of South River Road, US 41 to Winchester Boulevard Design and permitting through fall 2027
Connector Phase 5 Four-lane widening of Winchester Boulevard, South River Road to the county line Same program, $26.5 million funding gap
East Manasota Beach Road Extension New 2.3-mile, two-lane road from 0.6 mile east of State Road 776 to the county line $15 million from mobility fees, contractual completion by June 2029

The Manasota Beach Road extension is on its own timeline, with its own holdup. A neighboring property owner appealed a permit the county needs from the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The county's development partner plans to request construction bids once that permit is issued.

Planning a Week Around the Light at US 41

  1. North toward I-75, North Port, or East Venice Avenue. All six lanes are open, with signals at West Villages Parkway, Center Road and East Venice Avenue. Expect some closeout crews and patching until FDOT's early 2027 completion estimate.
  2. On foot or by bike along the corridor. The 10-foot shared-use paths on both sides are part of the finished project, along with pedestrian islands and ADA-accessible ramps at crossings.
  3. South toward Englewood and Manasota Key. Past US 41, it's the same road as last year. Watch for the signal-fiber work and the Winchester intersection project in the coming months. The widening itself can't start before late 2027 and still depends on closing the funding gap.

If your Saturday includes a beach stop in Englewood or on Manasota Key plus an evening event at Downtown Wellen or CoolToday Park, the drive home from the coast is the slow part.
